Oh helloooooo there. Happy Friday. Happy … however much time has elapsed since I last wrote here. I’ve been traveling, working hard, etc. Lots of deadlines and covering for other people lately, but hopefully after this week, things will be decidedly more relaxed for a bit. I have a lot of things I want to say here. Very pressing stuff. So pressing. STAY TUNED.
Just because I had a little hiatus doesn’t mean I completely shut myself off from the Internet altogether. There are a lot of posts from Disney community blogs that have really stuck with me from the past few weeks, and I think they’re worth visiting or revisiting or what have you.
Here are some things I wrote about (kinda) recently:
I have a Disneyland Bucket List.
I was all like, “Oooh, I loooove Port Orleans-Riverside!”
I realized I’ve been (sporadically!) blogging for a year.
I went to Disney with my best buddy John Cena.
Here are some posts I loved reading (recently or not quite as recently):
Imagineering Disney put stills from “Saving Mr. Banks” next to photos and footage of Walt Disney, P.L. Travers and Disneyland for a nice side-by-side comparison. A lot of great attention to detail, as can be expected!
Estelle of This Happy Place Blog recently reviewed YA novel “Disneylanders” and then featured a Q&A with author Kate Abbott! So fun! It sounds like a really great book and I am genuinely excited to read it soon.
Now, to get serious. My last trip to WDW was in January and they were just starting to roll out slightly more complex RFID all-in-one cards that simply required waving in front of hotel room doors and posts outside of the parks to entrance. Of course, shit’s getting crazy with MagicBands, MyMagic+, FASTPASS+ … all these components that have slowly been rolling out over the past few months. It’s hard to have a definitive opinion on all this when I haven’t really encountered it yet, but the amount of preplanning and interconnection involved makes me kinda nervous — and this is coming from a person who LOVES nothing more than to sit down and plan every moment of a Disney trip. As much as I love to envision my trip in advance, things aren’t set in stone — except for my ADRs and running to Space Mountain when I rope-drop MK, of course — and my traveling companions are definitely a lot less rigid about how their days are spent at the parks. Additionally, there is the money factor … prices keep rising, but does the quality justify the cost? Two very well-articulated posts from Nerds in Wonderland and Futureprobe take an insightful look at what’s really happening to the Disney experience.
Speaking of planning things down to the minute, the Disney Food Blog posted a review of using FASTPASS+ for lunch at Be Our Guest … including ordering the meal in advance! While the whole thing seemed to go off without a hitch — the reviewer even changed her order at the last second without any issues — it really feels like spontaneity is being actively discouraged. Maybe that’s an overstatement, or just ridiculous coming from me, an obsessive trip planner — but there really is something to be said for going with the flow, or at least being able to choose what you want to eat the day that you’re going to eat it!
